test for tartrate

Post by KLSmith »

I am doing some chemical identity tests based on USP procedures. I am looking for simple explanations of the chemical reactions that are occuring. (Note: I am not a chemist!)

Test for Tartrate: Dissolve a few mg of tartrate salt in sodium metaperiodate (I know this is an oxidizing agent). Add a drop of 1N sulfuric acid, and after 5 minutes add a few drops of sulfurous acid followed by a few drops of fuschin-sulfurous acid test solution. A reddish-pink color is produced.

Thanks.
