(NH4)2SO4 + CaCO3 -> ?
Hi,
What is produced when you mix (NH4)2SO4 + CaCO3 ?
Also what is produced when you mix (NH4)2SO4 + CaCO3 + H2O?
I think CaSO4 is one of the products of both reactions.

I don’t think anything produced when you mix two solids (NH4)2SO4 and CaCO3. If you heat it up, and then CaSO4 can form. The same reaction happens when you mix them in water:
(NH4)2SO4 + CaCO3 --> NH3 + CO2 + CaSO4
Certainly NH3 + CO2 can form (NH4)2CO3 or NH4HCO3, but ammonium carbonate and ammonium bicarbonate can easily degrade to NH3 and CO2 especially when heated.

The direction reaction of carbon dioxide with ammonia in aqueous solution is also the way to create Amomium Hydrogencarbonate NH4HCO3. Per my source (Concise Encyclopedia Chemistry by DeGruyter, page 64), heating a mixture of:
(NH4)2SO4 + CaCO3 --> CaSO4 + (NH4)2CO3
produces the compound. In the process, ammonia sublimes off together with NH4HCO3 and Ammonia Carbamate (which is formed from the reaction of heating dry ammonia and CO2).
I would just add how you heat the mixture maybe important as our compound (NH4)2CO3 decomposes completely at 58C (into H2O, CO2 and NH3) and NH4HCO3 starts to decompose in the range 40C to 60C.

(NH4)2SO4 + CaCO3 + H2O → CaSO4 + CO2 + H2O + 2NH3
The same products: CaSO₄, CO₂, H₂O, and NH₃.
(NH4)2SO4 + CaCO3 + H2O → CaSO4 + CO2 + H2O + 2NH3
The same products: CaSO₄, CO₂, H₂O, and NH₃.
