(How do I determine empirical formulas of compound that is 54.2%F and 45.8%S)

*you have a 100 g sample- assume 54.2 grams of F and 45.8 grams of S
*convert each element into atomic mass using the atomic masses
find the atomic masses of F and S (F=19.00 and S is 32.07)
*divide the values obtained from the 2nd step by the smallet value.
* use the numbers obtained as subscripsts only if they are whole

hope this helps
