Balancing equation

Post by smzack »

A question I have on a homework problem: balance this equation and solve this problem:
Fe{2}O{3} + C + O{2} = Fe + CO{2}
if blast furnace was loaded with 25 ton of coke and 5.0 tons of hematite, how many tons of iron can be formed?
I balanced it as:
2Fe{2}CO{3} + 4C +1O{2} = 4Fe + 4CO{2}
Can anyone tell me if this is correct so I can complete the problem?
Thanks,
smzack

There are two reaction in the firnace:

Code: Select all

2C + O2 = 2CO
and

Code: Select all

Fe2O3 + 3CO = 2Fe + 3CO2
which can be combined into one:

Code: Select all

2Fe2O3 + 6C + 3O2 = 4Fe + 6CO2
Hope this helps.
