Polar molecules

Post by hedgehog »

Ok...I am rather new to this and I have a question which has been bugging me.

In a lipid (specifically in the plasma membranes of Prokaryotes) the polar ends of the lipid molecules are hydrophilic but the non-polar end is hydrophobic.

Now, if part of the molecule is polar, doesn't mean that the entire molecule is polar? How can you have a non-polar end? That seems oxymoronic.

Any help would be appreciated.
