[Co(H2O)6]2+ ammonium thiocyanate

Post by Soda »

Hello

Im trying to work out what happens in this reaction, Im getting confused.

[Co(H2O)6]2+ + NH4SCN -> blue solution with a precipitate.

Am I correct to guess that it is forming the blue complex [Co(SCN)4]2- + 4NH4 + 6H2O

where NH4 is the precipitate?

Help!

The blue comples is in fact [Co(SCN)4]2-
but precipitate cannot be NH4! Here is the reaction:
[Co(H2O)6]2+ + 4 NH4SCN = [Co(SCN)4]2- + 4 NH4+ + 6 H2O

Thanks for that,

Could it be possible that the precipitate that we saw was not really precipitate from the reaction but excess ammonium thiocyanate solid?

:D
