Ammonia smell

Post by FSRII »

I am a little rusty on my chem. I am looking for any info on why, when I mix NaOH with a saturated NaCL brine solution that has a zinc solution mixed in, do I get a strong smell of ammonia. Just wondering if anyone knew, as well as the possble chemical equation.

If you felt strong ammonia smell it must be that there was some ammonia salt in the solution, for example NH4Cl:
NH4Cl + NaOH = NaCl + H2O + NH3
