Phenyl Lithium Reaction

Post by harshitbbaruah »

I need an answer and explanation of the following reaction. The answer is option (a) but the book doesn't provide a mechanism.

Phenyllithium attack the CH2 group between the two Carbonylgroups. The Carbanion will push out the bromine and close the ring. This guide to product b first. With Hypoiodite it reduces b to product a by releaising acetate.
