Hey,
I've been looking at the synthesis routes for 1,4-Butanediol and I'm wondering why the following hasn't been suggested:
Can't the extra hydroxyl- and two carbonyl groups be selectively removed from malic acid, or what am I missing here?

There are standard methods to reduce carboxyl groups to alcohol and also alcohol group to alkan. But your example guide to liquid ecstasy.
