Certain water soluble organic compounds like phenolphthalein and bromothymol blue behave as weak acids and exhibit different colours in their acid (HIn) and conjugate base \((In^-)\) forms.
\(HIn(aq)_{\text{acid Indicator Colour A}} + H_2O(l) \rightleftharpoons H_3O^+(aq)_{\text{Conjugate acid}} + In^–(aq)_{\text{Conjugate base Colour B}}\)
Such compounds are useful as indicators in acid-base titrations, and finding out \(H^+\)ion.
In the aforesaid chemical equation, what is the meaning of In?
