Do you know how orthoclase and biotite will react when the get in contact with sulfuric or nitric acid? Their formulas are:
KAlSi3 O8
K(Mg,Fe)3 AlSi3 O10 (OH,F)2
I know it's something strange but I really need help with this.

Beside silicon all other ions can be washed out like in the other example.

Code: Select all
KAlSi3O8 + 4 H+ => K+ + Al³+ + 3 SiO2 + 2 H2O
Code: Select all
K(Mg,Fe)3AlSi3O10(OH,F)2 + 10 H+ => K+ +3 (Mg²+,Fe²+) + Al³+ + 3 SiO2 + 5( 6) H2O + 2( 0)HF
in case of Flouride

And why are the 6 and 0 between parenthesis?

If flouride is present then you get 5 water and 2 hydrogenflouride
if it is absent then you get only 6 water.

Oh, so the parethensis in the reagents means that they might be present or not?

Yes, in brackets you can have OH or F not both in same time. The same for Mg and Fe. At least there can be 4 different minerals.
