Reaction between MEA (monoethanolamine) + CuSO4

Post by hoangnga0896 »

Can anyone have an idea about reaction between monoethanolamine and copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4.5H2O) ? I don't know the equation and exact products. Has anyone in this forum done the reaction before?

Monoethanolamin is a derivat of ammonia. Cpperions react with it to form a complex

Code: Select all

[Cu(NH3)4]
²+ . Instead of the ammonia you can set in any amin.

Could you write full chemical equation for me? I still can not visualize because the equation is very important for calculation.

What is the formula aqueaus complex of copper?
If you know this you exhchange water with the amin.

I think the equation could be
C2H7NO + CuSO4.5H2O = C2H5NOCu2+ + H2SO4 + H2O

No

Copper ions in water are

Code: Select all

Cu(H2O)4
²+

The water will exchange to the amin . The sulfate is not changed its spectator ion.

First step:

Code: Select all

Cu(H2O)4
²+ +

Code: Select all

 NH2-CH2-CH2OH => [Cu(H2O)3NH2-CH2-CH2-OH]
²+

This can happen until all water is exhanged.

Thanks a lot. I have 1 more question. If I continue putting H3PO3 into the solution, will complex react with acid phosphorus? Is this complex stable?

It will react, complex only stable at pH 7 and higher.

If MEA is excess and H3PO3 is taken into the solution, what will complex react with first?

The acid reacts with MEA until all is neutalized and also the complex is destroyed.
