When chemists write such things as: 1-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)-2-bromopropane
do they mean a combination of:
3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl (x1)
bromopropane (x2)

No. The 1 and 2 the numbers of the carbon in the propane where other groups are connected.

Instead of the oxygen the is a Hydrogen and a bromine on carbon 2

Thank you for taking the time to reply with your assistance. I've been discovering how creative chemists are. I stumbled on the Merck patent of 1912 - I wonder why it isn't more widely used? It appears easy and lots of fun.
