Reactions of J2 with mercury

Post by Genius5 »

How will an excess of J2 react with Hg(NO3)2 in the presence of humidity ? HgJO3 or HgJ2. What is the stable reaction product ?

I would say HgI2, because is not much soluble.

I2 + H2O => HI + HIO

Hg(NO3)2 + 2 HI => HgI2 + 2 HNO3
