Sulfonic groups + NaOH

Post by mariajim »

Hi everyone! I really need your help for my final proyect
In a titration of a solid acid catalyst with a NaOH solution, what reaction occurs between sulfonic groups (HSO3-) present in solid acid catalyst and NaOH??

I'm doubting between:

Code: Select all

1) H2SO3 + 2NaOH >>> Na2SO3 + 2H2O

Code: Select all

2) HSO3(-) + NaOH >>> Na2SO3 + H2O
(without adjust stoichiometry)

It is supposed that before titration we add 15 ml NaCl solution to the solid sample of catalyst to favor ion exchange, so I think before titration, there's an equilibrium like this:

Code: Select all

HSO3(-) + H2O = SO3(-2) + H3O(+)
Could someone please tell me if that's correct? Thank you in advance
