Salicylic acid

Post by RozaHathaway »

Hello everyone! I really need your help. Our teacher wants us to "produce" salicylic acid from C but she told us "do not make the real equation, I want you to produce it only by using equations you've done". However, we haven't done such equations. Till now I have written this:
C + 2H2 ---t°,Ni,P---> CH4
2CH3Cl + 2Na ---> C2H6 + 2NaCl
C2H6 --t°--> C2H4 + H2
C2H4 --t°--> C2H2 + H2
3C2H2 --t°,Ni,P---> C6H6
C6H6 + Cl2 ---> C6H5Cl + HCl
C6H5Cl + NaOH ---> C6H5OH + NaCl
C6H5OH + Na ---> C6H5ONa + 1/2 H2
And now I really don't know what am I supposed to do :shock: Does someone have an idea what more do I need?
Thank you

Try o solve this problem "backwards"
For example, salicylic acid can be produced from phenol
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salicylic_acid
Use Wikipedia as your source

This reaction is doubtful
C6H5Cl + NaOH ---> C6H5OH + NaCl

Some alkylchlorides can do this but not arylchlorides
Remember safety first! Check MSDS and consult with professionals before performing risky experiments.
