Hi all,

I have a question that trubles me for a while, please help me to answer it:

If magnesium is dissolved in dilute nitric acid, several redox reactions will take place:

Code: Select all

Mg+H^+ = Mg^(2+) + H2

Code: Select all

Mg+H^+ NO3^- = Mg^(2+) + NO + H2O

Code: Select all

Mg+H^+ NO3^- = Mg^(2+) + NH4^+ + H2O
Keeping a potassium iodide (KI) filter paper into the resulting gases the paper turns brown.

Please help me to identify the correct reaction that explain the browning of the paper and please explain me the ongoing reactions and their equations.

Thank you for your help and patience.
