this equation can be balanced with various sets of coefficients
2 I(4)O(9) -----> I(2)O(6) + 3I(2) + 6O(2)
2 I(4)O(9) -----> 2 I(2)O(6) + 2 I(2) + 3 O(2)
4 I(4)O(9) -----> I(2)O(6) + 7 I(2) + 15 O(2)
8 I(4)O(9) -----> 9 I(2)O(6) + 7 I(2) + 9 O(2)

Code: Select all

I4O9 = I2O6 + I2 + O2
Oh, this is trickery.

Code: Select all

I2O6
does not exist.

Code: Select all

I2O5
does. It is

Code: Select all

O(IO2)2
On the other side of the equation,

Code: Select all

I4O9
is

Code: Select all

I(OIO2)3
with one Iodine in oxidation state +3 and the others are in +5 (and covalently bonded to the oxygen). So one of these Iodine will react differently to the others. One of these Iodine will go to

Code: Select all

I2
. Can you tell me which one? X marks that iodine.

Now, balancing the equation:

Code: Select all

X(OIO2)3 = I2O5 + X2 + O2
, we get :

Code: Select all

4 X(OIO2)3 = 6 O(IO2)2 + 2 X2 + 3 O2
And conclude that

Code: Select all

 4 I4O9 = 6 I2O5 + 2 I2 + 3 O3
