whats the pros and cons in oxidizing H2S with KMnO4?

Post by kk »

You work in an environmental Laboratory and you have been given some water samples to analyze for mercury. You can smell the presence of hydrogen sulfide in the samples and you know that sulphur can cause a problem. It has been suggested to remove this problem by oxidizing the samples with potassium permanganate. In detail, discuss the pros and cons for this approach. Do not discuss factors such as environmental impact, we are only concerned with the analytical issues. Can you pls tell if you guys know? :(
