[Cu(en)2(NO3)2] reaction

Post by Soda »

Hi,

I had an aqueous solution of [Cu(en)2(NO3)2] complex, (a purple solution), this was added to a solution made of Hg(NO3)2 and KI.

The colour remained purple with a white precipitate.

Im trying to work out whats happened here, I think that the Hg(NO3)2 and KI will be present as ions in solution (there was no orange precipitate- it was a clear solution) so

[Cu(en)2(NO3)2] + Hg(2+) + NO3(2-) + 2K(+) + 2I(-) --->

I dont think iodide would be strong enough to substitute en ligand. Could the solution be [Cu(en)2] + 2K2NO3 + HgI2

thank you :?
