Can an ion with 6 electrons in outer shell in the third group have charge +1?

Post by Kaiae »

My son got this exercise to prepare for a chemistry test:
What is the symbol for the ion with charge +1, in the third series, with 6 electrons in outer shell
He deducted that would be Cl+ but is it even a possible ion ?

Yes it's possible in compound like Cl-F or Cl2O. The element has to be more electronegative as chlorine. But it will be more polarized not like a cathion Na+.

It's wonderful that your son is interested in chemistry. On the other hand, when chlorine (Cl) gains an electron, it forms a Cl-ion, and its outer shell usually has seven electrons. The typical behavior of chlorine is actually at odds with an ion having six outer shell electrons and a positive charge. Perhaps he had a different ingredient in mind! Never stop sparking his interest!

Wrong. Neutral chlorine has 7 electrons. Chloride has 8 ( Octett rule)

Great question — and you're right to be skeptical Escape Road of Cl⁺ — it's not a common or stable ion.

What is the oxidation number of Chlorine in Cl2O and ClF in your opinion. It doesn't matter is it stable or not.
