Is ACS, ISO, Reag grade purer than food grade or not?

Post by easypeasyac »

Hello.
I need NH4Cl for use in food. Unfortunately, I can't find any food grade NH4Cl in my country. But I have ACS, ISO, Reag grade NH4Cl in my hand. Is it ok to use ACS grade in food? I know that ACS grade is purer than food grade but I am not sure.
Thank you.

ACS grade meets or exceeds purity standards set by the American Chemical Society (ACS). This grade is acceptable for food, drug, or medicinal use and can be used for ACS applications or for general procedures that require stringent quality specifications and a purity of ≥95%.
ISO
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification establishes credibility and trust among consumers, clients and other business partners. In today's international marketplace, such a designation validates that an organization adheres to global standards of quality assurance, manufacturing and business.

Reag grade
Reagent grade is generally equal to ACS grade (≥95%) and is acceptable for food, drug, or medicinal use and is suitable for use in many laboratory and analytical applications. USP grade meets or exceeds requirements of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). This grade is acceptable for food, drug, or medicinal use.

Thank you.

The ACS grade NH4Cl I have is 99.7 percent pure. It is very pure but since it is not produced for food use, could auxiliary chemicals (solvents etc.) that are dangerous to human health have been used in the production stages? Therefore, could this 0.3 percent consist of residues that are very dangerous to human health?

Refer to the datasheet, what is in. Food grade is less percentage. ACS is more clean as food grade.
Ammonium chloride is made from ammonia and hydrochloric acid or as side product in the Solvay process to produce sodiumcarbonate.
So there no dangerous compounds.

Thank you @ChenBeier;

Test Results in COA;
NH4Cl: 99.72 %
H2O: 0.5 %
Fe: 3 ppm
Anti Caking: 0.9 ppm

Unfortunately I couldn't get detail about what anti caking agent used in this product. :roll:
