Which alcohols decolourise?

Post by bohojekek »

I know that for alkaline potassium permanganate, solution turns either brown (adding primary alcohol) or green (secondary alcohol) or remains purple (tertiary alcohol). Not as sure about acidic. When will acidic potassium permanganate decolourise and what are the other colour changes possible?

Acidic Permanganate decolorize to Mn 2+. colorless slight pink. Some end with brown MnO2 between. The alcohol will be destroyed to CO2 and water.

Thank you, so this occurs for all alcohols other than tertiary?

Also tertiary. Result is CO2 and water.

In the case of a primary or secondary alcohol, the orange solution turns green. With a tertiary alcohol there is no colour change.

It was asked for acidic not alcaline. Your answer is wrong and it's already given above. Read more carefully before answering.
