Using Chloroform in the Garden

Post by Padd »

Hello. I'm in south africa and I have a serious mole problem - the Cape Dune Mole-Rat (it's a massive thing larger than a rabbit) is destroying my garden! I've contacted a professional and they say they use chloroform to kill them through multiple applications. I'm generally against using poisons (we have a veggie garden) and I'm just wondering if this is good practice? From what I can see Chloroform is dangerous stuff - is it safe to use in the garden?

Thought a bored science teacher might be able to help me out!!

Chloroform can cause cancer.
Check MSDS

Chlorine carbon compounds banned these days.

Thanks - I did see that.

The other thing they suggested is aluminum phosphate tablets - seems just as bad to me...

Think I'll avoid going down either of those routes... Might just have to get used to the moles

Probably get an essenz ( Urine or something) from an animal what the rat dont like, like from fox, wolf, lion, etc. Ask a veterinary for that and spray it to the area where the rat lives.
