Here is an easy guide for you: http://education.jlab.org/qa/pen_number.html
Remember safety first! Check MSDS and consult with professionals before performing risky experiments.

The atomic number may be found at the upper left corner, while the atomic weight can be found at the bottom.
Atomic number = number of protons.
Atoms have no overall electrical charge by definition. This means that the positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons must be in equilibrium.
no of protons = no of electrons.
An atom can absorb or lose electrons, transforming into an ion. An ion is nothing more than an atom that has been electrically charged. Adding or subtracting electrons from an atom has no effect on the element's identity, just on its net charge. The atomic weight is a measure of the total number of particles in the nucleus of an atom. In fact, it's not that simple. In comparison to the mass of carbon-12, the atomic weight is a weighted average of all naturally occurring isotopes of an element. Find mass number using
Mass Number = (Number of Protons) + (Number of Neutrons)
