Redox balancing

Post by chiraldude »

Hi, I am new to redox reactions and am trying to figure out how to balance this equation with the N.O. variation method.
KNO3 + Al + KOH + H2O = NH3 + KAlO2 📖

I can see that Al is oxidised and that N and H are reduced, however I cannot go any further with the balancing.
Thank you so much for your help!

Al => Al 3+ + 3e- Oxidation
NO3- + 6 H2O + 8 e-=> NH3 + 9 OH- Reduction
Start with this

Thanks, but I was looking to balance it with the method of the variation of the oxidation number, not the ionic one.

What is the Difference

Al 0 goes to Al 3+ need 3 electrons and Nitrogen from + 5 goes to -3. Needs 8 electrons

Ohh now I got it, I had mixed up the signs in the oxidation numbers of Ammonia. Thanks for your help!
