Ph not being interpreted as phenol group

Post by Hazey27 »

Hi! I'm trying to balance the equation Ph(CH3)(COOH) + SOCl2 = Ph(CH3)(COCl) + SO2 + HCl. When I tried to compute this using C6H5 for the phenol group, the balance chemical equation bot (at webqc (dot) org/balance.php) told me it was impossible and when I replaced the C6H5 with Ph, it gave me this warning: "Info: PhCH3COOH might be an improperly capitalized: PHCH3COOH, PHCH3CoOH." I am following the reaction RCOOH + SOCl2 = COCl + SO2 + HCl. I don't know why this isn't working but I wouldn't be surprised if it was user error. It may also be due to the ambiguity around COCl as the CO is a double bond which is not readily apparent though I suppose the number of hydrogens and lack of charge takes care of that.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!
