C2F6 + HNO3 + H2O Inquiry

Post by kavsilly »

If I bubble pressurized C2F6 through a 1% HNO3 solution is HF generated?

Dont think so. C-F bonds are very stable. 1% is very diluted acid.

The C-F bond energy in C2F6 is similar to C-H Bond energy, so the fluorine attached to a carbon is similar to hydrogen attached to carbon, there is no polarization in C-F bond hence no reaction will occur.

There will be no reaction. But your explation I dont think so. Flourine has the highest electronegativity, so there will be a polarisation between C and H. But this makes the bonding more stronger.

What if the contact is happening in a nebulizer heated to 110C? I was having clogging and originally thought I might be generating just enough HF to cause precipitate with analytes in my std solution within the nebulizer. I’ll be doing more testing to see if the issue continues.
