stoichiometry

Post by jd187922 »

Calculate the mass of carbon dioxide formed (CO2, 44.01 g/mol) if 38.9 g acetylene, (C2H2, 26.04 g/mol) reacted completely with oxygen.

The mass of carbon dioxide (CO2) formed if 38.9 g of acetylene(C2H2) reacted completely with oxygen(O2) is 65.74g.

I think the reaction is 2C2H2 + 5O2 → 4CO2 + 2H2O

Now, mole ratio of acetylene and carbon dioxide is 1:2. Molar mass of CO2 is 44.0098 g/gmol. Molar mass of C2H2 is 26.0378 g/gmol.

38.9/26.04 = 1.494 mol of C2H2 produces 1.494*2 =mol of CO2. So, CO2 produced is 1.494 * 2*44.0098 = 131.50g.

I think, this would be a correct answer.

Yes key point is ratio C2H2 and CO2 is 1:2.
So the double amount has to be calculated, what means 131,5 g
