Amphoteric HCO3

Post by Dhamnekar Winod »

Show how the hydrogen carbonate ion can act as both an acid and a base in water by writing appropriate equations using full electron-dot formulas.

What is the answer to this question? How to answer this question?

An acid is a proton donator, a base is a proton acceptor. Work with this.

HCO3⁻ + H2O → H3O⁺ + CO3⁻² Hydrogen carbonate anion acts as an acid.

\(HCO_3^- + H_2O \rightarrow H_2CO_3 + OH^- \) Hydrogen carbonate anion acts as an base
