If sodium hydroxide is added to the mixture, what will happen to the position of equilibrium?
1)The equilibrium shifts to the right.
2)The position of the equilibrium remains unchanged.
3)The equilibrium shifts to the left.
Answer provided is 3).
Let us see this reaction experimentally.
\(Br_2(l) + H_2O(l) + 2NaOH \rightleftharpoons Br^-(aq) + BrO^-(aq) + 2H_2O +2Na^+\)
Now, I don't understand how does this reaction shift to the left?
Would any member of this chemistry forum explain?

3 is wrong, the equilibrium will be unchanged. No 1 is right. The NaOH neutralise only the H+. So to getnew H+ the equilibrium has to shift to right.
Additionally you can skip 1 H2O in the equation.
