I am 16 and i was playing with baking soda and citric acid and I was wondering what is reacting and how do they react and also I wanted to write an equation.

Code: Select all

NaHCO3 + C6H8O7 = ?
Citric acid is an organic compound (or I think it is) and they haven't taught us that in school yet and I am just very curious. I know it's a neutralization reaction and will produce

Code: Select all

H2O
and

Code: Select all

CO2
Thank you in advance!

Citric acid contain three acidic groups.Carboxyl group R-COOH.

C6H8O7 = HOOC-CH2-CHOH(COOH)-CH2-COOH

Reaction now is 3 NaHCO3 + HOOC-CH2-CHOH(COOH)-CH2-COOH => 3 H2O + 3 CO2 + NaOOC-CH2-CHOH(COONa)-CH2-COONa.

You get Trisodium citrate, water and carbondioxide.
