It is a simple oxidation from naphthalen to phthalicacid and later to the anhydride or imide.

Check Phthalic acid anhydride

It is a redox reaction. Vanadium-V-oxide will be reduced to vanadium-III-oxide. This takes places several times by adding to Napthalen and oxidising the carbon. At the end Pthalic acid anhydride is remaining.

It is also redox reaction of xylene or o-Methylbenzoic acid with permanganate to phthalic acid. Manganese dioxide will be formed.

1) upward delivery

You have liquid. Ethanol decompose to ethylene an water by treating with sulfuric. So ethylene escapes the solution.
