Cant figure out how to solve this

Post by dflatimer »

Hello There,
I was treating my pool with Shock and was curious to see if I could solve the reaction, but couldn't. Now, its bothering me. It has been a few years since I have taken Chem, but I would really like to know how this is solved. Im pretty sure there are multiple steps.

C3Cl2N3NaO3 + H20 >>???

sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione and water

Thanks in advance,

DL

Just realized something... I have a salt water pool... So it would be:

C3Cl2N3NaO3 + H20 + NaCl = ???

Sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione, also known as Sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaCl2[C(O)N]3), can be written as NaCl2Cy, where Cy3- represents the triisocynaurate anion ( [C(O)N]33- ).

It reacts with water to produce hypochlorous acid.

NaCl2Cy + 3 H2O = NaOH + 2 HOCl + H3Cy

More fully, there's a network of equilibrium steps involving the association/disassociation of sodium and hydrogen ions, and the individual chlorination (redox) stages.
