Molar calculation question.

Post by superdemongob »

i believe this question is doable. i've done it twice but i've not arrived at the answer required. every time, i get something along the lines of CH2O3 and the required answer is C5H10O. i would like to know the method of arriving at this answer.
the question follows, please answer if you can.

"An organic compound X, which contains only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, has a molar mass of about 85 gmol-1.
0.43 g of X is burnt in excess oxygen, 1.10 g of carbon dioxide and 0.45 g of water are formed.
A) What is the empirical formula of X?
B) What is the molecular formula of X?"

any help is appreciated.
