bonding and reactions of halides

Post by sade »

1. Why does sulphuric acid behave differently from phosphoric acid in its reactions with sodium bromide and sodium iodide, but not in its reaction with sodium chloride?
2. What do the raection between concentrated sulphuric acid and the sodium halides suggest about the relative ease of oxidation of the hydrogen halides.
3. What property of hydrogen chloride makes it possible to prepare this gas by the action of one acid on the salt of another?
4. What common use is usually made of the reaction between silver nitrate and the halide ions in aqueous solution?
5. Why can a solution of I- (aq) help to distinguish between two colourless solutions containing K+ (aq) and Pb2+ (aq) respectively?
6. Investigate the effect of adding water to each of these chlorides: sodium, magnesium, aluminum and lithium. explain results, then investigate the solubility of each with hexane
7. Which of the above chlorides would you regard as predominantly covalent?
