Please help!!!

Post by pamelaH »

I need to find the theorectical yield of 3-Nonenoic acid from combining Heptanal and malonic acid. The problems is how do I get a balanced equation?? I have C3H4O4 + C7H14O = C9H16O2. Any help is greatly appreciated! ASAP!

Also, CO2 and H2O are products as well. I still can't get a balanced equation so I can solve the issue of the theoretical yield. Please help.

Here is the structure of the product

As for the synthesis, please read this paper
http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ed067p69

Get it from your school library computer.

Also read this book on page 540

The reaction goes via condensation and subsequent decarboxylation, so H2O and CO2 are in the products
Remember safety first! Check MSDS and consult with professionals before performing risky experiments.
