Reaction of MnO4 + HO2

Post by LloydReed »

I'm having trouble balancing the redox reaction between (MnO4)- and (HO2)- in a basic solution since I'm not quite sure what the products are. Basically:

(MnO4)- + (HO2)- -> ? + ?

Any help is appreciated!

wait. perxoyl anion, not radical. My mistake.

[edit]Ah, h. perxoyl anion, not radical. My mistake. Then it is:[/edit]

2 MnO4 + 3 HO2- + H2O = 2 MnO2 + 5 OH- + 3 O2

It says "Balance the equation for the oxidation of hydroperoxide ion, HO2- (aq) to O2 (g) by permanganate ion, MnO4- (aq), in a basic solution." This is so frustrating. :|

Edit: I finally figured it out! The final equation is:

2MnO4-(aq) + 3HO2- (aq) + H2O (l) -> 2MnO2 (s) + 3O2 (g) + 5OH- (aq)
