Help finding products.

Post by -.---.- »

Hey guys,

What are the products of=
- Cl + CuNO3 = ?
- SO4 + BaNO3 = ?

Could you also please explain how you got these answers so I can solve them myself for my next lab report?

Thanks!

Ba(NO3)2 + SO4(2-) --> BaSO4 + 2(NO3)-

When you add a sulfate to a soluble barium salt, a milky precipitate forms.

The first one is trickier. I would say you observed a color change, yes?

Cu2+ + Cl- ---> [CuCl]+

Essentially, copper(II) coordinates with chloride to form a greenish complex. That is why cupric chloride is green while cupric nitrate is blue!

It is hard to explain how to arrive at these, maybe someone else can try their hand. You have to memorize the solubility chart and know that barium sulfate is insoluble and you have to simply remember that copper(II) coordinates with chloride to form a green complex.

PS: If anyone is taking the AP chemistry test today : GOOD LUCK!
