Need help with oxidation and reduction reactions

Post by carloscharlie »

Problem is KClO3 + HBr > Br2 + H2O + KCl
What are the oxidation and reduction reactions that take place before balancing?
Thanks!

Oxidation is loss and reduction is gain. Oil Rig.

Writing the first reaction out, you get :

Code: Select all

6H+         +     KClO3    +       6e-        -->          KCl        + 3 H2O
Potassium chlorate is gaining electrons. This is the reduction half reaction.

Code: Select all

3(2Br-      -->      Br2     + 2e-)
Bromide is losing electrons. Therefore, this is the oxidation half reaction.

The overall reaction :

Code: Select all

6 HBr  +   KClO3     -->    3 H2O    +   KCl
