Help please

I wish to know what are the reaction that happens if you do the following.I am not a chemical wizard but my kid needs to do the following experement, you took coal place it in a bowl ad two table spoons of ammonia over the coal then you ad colourants and daily two tablespoons of salt and water to the coal, then once a week you ad ammonia again.I would appreciate it if any one can help me with the symbols and reaction that happens.

My gut says that there is not a chemical reaction, but a physical change. The coal will absorb the ammonia over time, that much is certain.

Someone else may have a better insight on this one. Good luck!
