Steps to balance equation

Post by MariaNY »

I have tried 6 or more times to balance this, and cannot seem to find what I am doing wrong. Can you please help.

Fe + HC2H3O2 = Fe(C2H3O2)3 + H2

The right equation is:
2Fe + 6HC2H3O2 = 2Fe(C2H3O2)3 + 3H2

For balancing equations I use chemistry apps, for example Chemistry Adviser:

Indeed. Or by hand, from:

Code: Select all

x Fe + y HC2H3O2 = x Fe(C2H3O2)3 + z H2
Start with the O (and C): 2y = 6x => y=6, x=2

Code: Select all

2 Fe + 6 HC2H3O2 = 2 Fe(C2H3O2)3 + z H2
Look to the H: 24 = 18 + 2z => z=3

Code: Select all

2 Fe + 6 HC2H3O2 = 2 Fe(C2H3O2)3 + 3 H2
