chemical reaction

Post by ndansira »

Can some one tell me what the products are when sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3) reacts with sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl)?

Code: Select all

HSO3(-) + OCl(-)   =>    SO4(2-)  +   Cl(-)
This occurs in basic conditions; in acidic conditions chlorine is formed.

Code: Select all

HSO3(-) + 3OH(-)  =>   SO4(2-) + 2H2O  +2e(-)

H2O + OCl(-) + 2e(-)  =>  Cl(-)  + 2OH(-)

Code: Select all

NaHSO3 + NaOCl + NaOH   =>   Na2SO4 + NaCl + H2O
In acidic conditions :

Code: Select all

HSO3(-) + OCl(-)   =>    SO4(2-)  +   Cl2

HSO3(-)  + H2O  =>   SO4(2-)  +3 H(+) +2e(-)

2 OCl(-) + 4 H(+) + 2e(-)  =>  Cl2  + 2 H2O

NaHSO3 + 2NaOCl + H(+)  =>  Cl2 + H2O + Na2SO4
It is probably more complicated in acidic conditions because of the equilibrium hypochlorite has with hydroxide and aqueous chlorine, but that is a pretty good approximation.
